About bucket lists...

The other day as I was driving from the airport in the Valley of the Sun, I heard an interesting conversation on the radio about creating your "bucket list". I suppose the movie popularized the concept, but listening to ordinary people talk about things on their bucket list was eye-opening. Combine that with a couple of books I read recently, 'First Things First' and 'Life's greatest lessons : 20 things that matter', I was sold on putting together my 'bucket list'.

The reality is that the only certain event in our lives will occur some day whether we are ready for it or not. And, each passing day brings that day closer, whether we choose to acknowledge our mortality or not. Working on this list has made me actively appreciate all that is good in my life, put things that aren't so good into perspective, and think about my wish list and my legacy. There's just so much more to do, to give, to learn, to see, and to experience!

If time and money were unconstrained, I'd have booked a world tour, and contributed to enough child welfare, women's issues, and nature conservation funds by now. Yet, keeping reality in mind, I'm working on a more "achievable" list. Will I be able to check out the cherry blossom festival in Japan, inspire a child to challenge himself and do his best for his own sake, scuba dive off the Great Barrier Reef, plant 100 trees, or backpack in Ladakh? I don't know, but I have my fingers crossed and eyes open for opportunities to do these and many more :)
