Navigational challenges...

I'm not sure if "directionally challenged" counts as an official handicap, but unfortunately, I suffer from it. I know my left from my right, but when it comes to figuring out how streets are sequenced, I just can't seem to remember the order or figure out which direction is NE without a compass. It's probably highlighted even more by the fact that my family and friends all seem to be uber savvy when it comes to getting from point A to point B.

Case in point : S. and I were in Amsterdam last month - though neither of us had been there before, S. was easily navigating the streets while I was mostly clueless, even with a map :(

And so imagine my annoyance with my recent spate of bad luck with GPS:

GPS # 1 - Garmin. Stopped working less than a year since I first received it as a graduation gift. It just won't charge up!

GPS # 2 - Magellan. Partially stopped working less than 3 months since I bought it as a replacement for my Garmin. Not as smart as Garmin when it comes to figuring out I've taken another turn, but eventually always managed to get me where I wanted to go. Now, its audio function has stopped working!

Seriously, those of you who have been telling me time and again, that I need to reduce my reliance on GPS, get paper maps, and learn to navigate streets without the annoying lady telling me where to turn next...it's almost like your admonitions have been heard :P

I read up on this company that not only manufactures a GPS but that their software has optimisation algorithms for route prediction in conjunction with traffic patterns... you need to upgrade. Not sure about hardware reliability...
