So, I've been reading 'The Omnivore's Dilemma' based on A's recommendation. It's a very thought-provoking book - though I'm a little more than halfway through it, I have already started reading labels of processed foods just to see how much corn is present in them! My perception about organic foods has also changed - maybe those 'happy cows' aren't as happy as they seem and most organic foods do not come from idyllic pastoral places, but the 'Dirty Dozen' is certainly a good list to know about!
A list of other side effects (not completely related to the book, of course):
1. My junk-food radar is certainly more active (not that I'm much of a junk-food eater...road trips are an exception!);
2. I have started running;
3. My refrigerator has more fruit juice than leftovers (well, I'm using the "100% orange / carrot juice" shortcut to meet the 5-fruit & veggie-servings-a-day goal);
4. I'm deliberately cooking more at home now in an attempt to be more aware of what I'm eating.
Talking about cooking at home, I've also been experimenting with some of my mom's recipes - for example, I cooked Swiss Chard (called 'laal maath' in Marathi) on Monday...got the recipe from my sis, and my mom was super-shocked when she heard that I actually made it :D
Besides the nostalgia factor and my love of cooking, these recipes are pretty easy and typically take <30 minutes to make (no grinding multiple masalas, pastes etc). Time, travel, and work schedules will tell how long I can sustain this new lifestyle without sneaking take-outs and frozen foods, but in the meanwhile, here's a list of my dinner experiments this week:
1. Swiss Chard cooked in typical Maharashtrian style
2. Spinach Raita
3. Tilwale Aloo (Potatoes with Sesame seeds)
This weekend's experiment - Beet and Arugula Salad, though I'm still trying to figure out what dressing to use (Ginger / Cheese / Orange)....

Don't you need guinea pigs to 'certify' your experiments? How come we don't get invited?
