Last week, I tried this amazing sushi place called Amasia's just a couple of blocks away from my place. It has little paper squares with origami instructions at each table, a handwritten wooden board with the day's specials that the server carries around while taking orders, and a definite bias towards the use of mango in house rolls. Long story short, the sushi was pretty good ...I even ended up trying some uni (albeit after much hesitation). But that dinner made me realize that 2008 will be "the" year I discovered sushi. Seriously, I mean it!
I'd first tried sushi nearly seven years ago, and instantly disliked it..there's something about the texture of unagi. Yet, in January this year, I finally got over my sushi dislike at a great little restaurant in the Fillmore, thanks to a very patient and convincing duo. Since then, my addiction to sushi has grown by leaps and bounds, so much so that I can now even eat sushi for breakfast if that's an option :) I've also started appreciating sushi...it is definitely an acquired taste...you have to savor each piece, and as you try more places, you can start telling good sushi from mediocre. I'm probably at the kindergarten level if sushi appreciation were like school - for example, I now enjoy nigiri sushi, know that pink ginger is a sign of a low-end sushi place, and can tell my hamachi from shake and tobiko. I still love my maki sushi and have yet to re-try unagi (though eel sauce on rolls works just fine!)...but I know that I will eventually get there!
In the meanwhile, I wonder what 2009 will bring :)
